Overview

An Ag Journalist, like any journalist, may work in a variety of conditions and on any number of news stories.  Ag Journalists typically cover stories related to production agriculture, government and agriculture policy, weather conditions and events, agriculture technology, and more.  An Ag Journalist may work in a variety of mediums, including web, print, radio, and television.  Communication skills are a must, and attention to detail and the ability to work with others will heavily influence an Ag Journalist's career.  Pursuing a degree in communications or agriculture journalism, and gaining experience by working on a collegiate publication and through internships will help you land a job in ag journalism after college.  Ag Journalists may or may not travel often for work, but typically do put in long hours under strict deadlines.  The ability to multitask and balance multiple projects will be needed.
