Overview

A Farm Cooperative Manager is generally the top level employee of a cooperative location and reports to a board of directors.  For larger cooperatives covering a regional scale, the Farm Cooperative Manager may report to a regional manager or board, as well as the local board.  Farm Cooperative Managers work on a variety of tasks, including sales, finance/bookkeeping, HR, operations, maintenance, customer service, planning/strategy, and more.  They must also be familiar with many different crops or farm enterprises, and have good social skills.  Farm Cooperative Managers should have good leadership abilities, an eye for details, and stay abreast of industry products, changes, and trends.

Responsibilitites

The board of directors for a cooperative is responsible for making large decisions, setting objectives, and defining the direction of the business as a whole.  The Farm Cooperative Manager is responsible for ensuring the operation and management of the cooperative is in-line with the desires of the board.  A Farm Cooperative Manager is usually a non-voting participant at board meetings, oversees and manages the day-to-day activities of the cooperative, keeps track of the cooperative's finances, manages personnel issues, and ensures employees are properly trained and complete the duties of their respective positions.  They also are expected to maintain the facilities and grounds of the cooperative, maintain adequate and appropriate inventory, work closely with suppliers, prepare information for board meetings, and research and plan activities for the short- and long-range goals of the cooperative.  A Farm Cooperative Manager may represent the cooperative at meetings, conferences, trade shows, and other events, and is expected to project a professional image of the cooperative when representing the cooperative.
